By Ms. Treva Jenkins - Teacher and Mentor

Maricopa Wells Middle School is providing a new leadership opportunity for all 6th, 7th and 8th graders. All students are encouraged to have a voice on campus and become leaders for their grade level. This new leadership opportunity is called Panther Ambassadors. Students volunteer for this position and can also be nominated by their teachers. Ms. Treva Jenkins commented, “The response has been overwhelmingly positive. More than 60 students across the three grade levels have decided they want to become a Panther Ambassador.” The Panther Ambassador initiative is an extension of the school's approach to mentoring young people entitled, Helping Kids Succeed Panther Style.

The two advisers for the Panther Ambassador initiative are Treva Jenkins, teacher and mentor and Jason Szoltysik, Assistant Principal. The Panther Ambassador initiative will allow students to be their unique individual selves. The program will shine the light on their passions and strengths and help them become leaders of their own lives. The tenants of the initiative include teamwork, trust, honesty, respect and integrity. Ambassadors will be trained in peer mentoring and peer mediation. These young people will take a prominent and active leadership role on campus as well as participate in mentoring elementary students at the elementary schools.

Thad Miller, Principal stated, “I believe every child has the potential to be a leader and I am excited about the leadership possibilities and the positive campus culture this new initiative will bring.”

Spring Sports

Panther Spring sports season is getting into full swing. Girls Soccer and Boys Basketball will have tryouts the first week in March; there will be subsequent practices for those respective teams after school. After a disappointing football season, the Panthers are full of hope for the next sports' season.

Girls Soccer, coached by Mr. Steeves, is ready to make some noise. Additionally, the boys' basketball team looks to get back to winning form. Coach G returns to help the boys reach their full potential with players that have good skills and high hopes. It's now up to them to take that skill and use it for a cohesive team. Let's go Panthers!

Panther Wrestling is set 'to go to the mattresses!' This is another sport which possess much skill and a dynamic opportunity.
